Student group slams "BN tool" varsity authorities

PETALING JAYA: A student group has criticised Universiti Sains Malaysia's authorities for barring it from distributing pamphlets denouncing the proposed amendment to the Employment Act.

In a press statement, Students Progressive Front representative Khaw Seng Hean said: “It's absurd that the government criticises students for not getting involved in issues affecting the people but contradicts itself by stopping students when they do get involved.”

Apart from distributing pamphlets, the student group also sold t-shirts that read, “Malaysians for Beng Hock” and “1Black Malaysia” at their service counter.

However, the university authorities stopped the students on the ground that there was no approval sought from the student affairs department.

“They likened the department to our parents and (said that) we should have got their consent before conducting our activities,” said Khaw.

The student leader said since the next parliamentary sitting was around the corner, the students had no time to put in a formal application.

Khaw also accused the student affairs department of being a Barisan Nasional tool.

“They told us that students should focus on academic issues and not concern ourselves with workers' rights,” he said.

Khaw said students must understand the proposed amendments to the Employment Act, as they would enter the employment sector upon graduation.

According to the student leader, the university was only interested in getting students to do community service rather than allowing them to fight for comprehensive changes.

“We will continue distributing the pamphlets and be part of the community's struggle,” he said.
